NASM Optimum Performance Training™ Model (OPT)

The NASM OPT™ Model is the first evidence-based training system founded on the scientific rationale of human movement science and most comprehensive training system in the fitness industry. Learners will use the knowledge and skills to take their exercise programming beyond the content covered in existing Personal Trainer qualifications. NASM's OPT™ Model will guide learners through a systematic progression approach to fitness assessment and subsequent exercise programming. By understanding and applying NASM's OPT™ Model learners are better informed regarding assessment and programming decisions which will ultimately enhance client success in relation to their goals and promote exercise safety. This course is designed to be a bridge for fitness professionals who have obtained a prior qualification or certification in personal training.

Learning Objectives

  • Define the specific goals and objectives of using the OPT™ Model during programme design.
  • How to conduct subjective, physiological, postural, and performance assessments, as well as the appropriate flexibility techniques.
  • Outline the techniques and benefits of effective cardiorespiratory programming.
  • Define the core musculature and its importance within the kinetic chain and identify the acute variables for effective core programme design.
  • Outline key strategies for implementing balance training as you work to correct movement dysfunction and prevent injuries.
  • Discuss the concepts behind designing and implementing a safe and effective plyometric training regimen.
  • Determine the importance and benefits of using individualised SAQ techniques with clients at any fitness level.
  • Assess how the body adapts to the various forms of resistance training and provide specific programming strategies for each phase of the OPT™ Model.
  • Develop a comprehensive, integrated training programme, for any client, through the application of specific acute variables.

Prerequisites: It’s recommended to have any of the following before taking the OPT™ course:

  • Certificate III or IV in Fitness
  • NASM CPT
  • Degree in Exercise Science or a related field of study
